White after Labor Day

There is a well known adage that says you shouldn't wear white after Labor Day. Why not? Most sources can't come up with much of a good reason. Some claim it was some snobby, rich women's arbitrary rule to separate those in the know from those who, well, didn't know. Maybe it was women's fashion magazines in the '50s that drilled this idea into middle-class women's minds. Others come to a practical conclusion: summer's over, and it's time to put away your light-weight white clothing and don colors and fabrics more appropriate for the fall, winter, and spring. Are these seasons particularly dirty, or is this a linen problem? I'm not sure what to think. I get the point that you should wear a fabric that is weather appropriate. That means that you might not want to wear your white linen shirt in -20 degree weather, right?

Many sensible contemporary people have done way with the no-white-after-labor-day edict and realize that you can wear any color you want whenever you want. Even fashion forward designer Coco Chanel realized this long ago. She wore white year-round.

If Coco can do it, so can I. On Monday I wore white skinny pants (my fav brand of jeans right now is 7 for All Mankind).

*Shout-out to my mom who just gave me these hand-me-downs from her own closet!

Oh, yeah, they also are leopard print white pants. Can't get cooler than that, right?! I can add this to my list of leopard print things. (See previous blog post.)

On Wednesday I wore a white jean jacket. As I explained in a previous blog post, I love denim. What you might not know is that I love all colors of denim! I'll write about this at another time, but for now I will tell you that one of my most treasured items of clothing is my white jean jacket. I have had this thing for as long as I can remember. Like regular denim, it goes with everything. Thank God for denim!
