A Pirate's Life for Me; or, Theme-Based T's

Yo-ho-ho-ho! Gimme a bottle of rum. Just kidding. (Maybe....)

Wednesday was pirate day in my 300-level transatlantic literature course, and of course I had to wear my pirate t-shirt. I actually have a full pirate outfit, which I first donned for UMF's Adaptacon. I have a burgundy, faux velvet jacket with gold trim, a tricorn hat (very piratey), and a plastic, but realistic-looking cutlass. See:

When I wore the outfit above to Adaptacon, most people did not get to see the awesome t-shirt underneath. I remedied that on Wednesday. I also wore my prized* tricorn hat.

*At Adaptacon I actually won a prize for this outfit.

To complete this semester's look, I wore the shirt and hat with a pair of distressed, skinny-fit Seven jeans, rolled at the bottom. Comfy fit, perfect match for the shirt, and a jean that is not blue, but gray-black.

When my freshmen saw me walk in, they were somewhat perplexed. Was I really wearing a pirate shirt? one asked. Why, yes, I said and explained why. My second class of the day, the 300-level one, immediately knew what was going on. The students in the last class, a 100-level lit course, were too tired it seemed to even notice. :D Or maybe students have come to expect the unexpected in terms of what I wear.

Anyhow, I highly recommend theme-based dress for professor-wear. When I teach Shakespeare, I wear Shakespeare shirts. When I teach Austen, Austen shirts. The themed-t gives you a great excuse to dress casually for the day but still feel like you are dressing up, or at least dressing the part.
