Antique Lockets

This post is about a treasured accessory: my antique locket given to me by my aunt. I have always loved lockets. Since I was a child I coveted these special charms. I remember having a locket so small that I couldn't fit pictures inside. I remember having one filled with two pictures of my kitties. I now have one filled with my husband and cat (my family, right?). :) Yesterday I wore this locket.

Luckily my mom gave me a long chain upon which to wear this locket. Why the long chain? you might ask. It's vital that you can actually see the pictures inside the locket when you wear it. When I was younger I wore lockets that could be seen by others but not by me, the wearer. The chains were too short. As a kid, I couldn't figure out how to make this work. As an adult I realize that one must wear a locket on a chain long enough to allow the wearer to hold the locket away from her face and look at the pictures inside. I also learned that one should put the pictures upside down in the locket. By upside down, I mean that the as you, the viewer, look at the locket hanging on the ring you see the pictures upside down. I, the wearer, see them right side up. I never figured that out as a child, either. Now everything makes much more sense.

Some days more than others you need to wear the locket. It's an amulet that wards off evil. It's a reminder that your family, or kitties, have your back. It's a memento of days past. As it turns out, yesterday this wearer needed this locket.
