Pockets.

Any fashion guest-blog I might contribute has to start and end with pockets. Pockets in sweaters, in skirts, in pants, in blazers… doesn’t matter. Any of the above, or, often, some combination of the above, as far as I’m concerned, are the essentials of what professors wear.

Recently, on a day when I had multiple meetings, multiple classes, and basically was running from start to finish, I decided on a crisp white dress shirt along with a long navy skirt with small white polka dots as my wardrobe for the day. I looked professional; beyond that, I looked nice, I thought, and my husband agreed. Still, there was not a pocket in sight.

No pockets? Then where was I to put my office keys? My cell phone? Money, in case I needed a coffee mid-afternoon?

It’s one thing when I only need to sit in my office and work. I can keep those necessary objects in my computer bag, or a coat pocket, and take them out if I need them.

But on a day when I’m going from one class to another, one meeting to another, it’s a different story. Searching for some documents, I noticed the grit on my floor that was left over from last winter. I knew where to find a broom… I set out to climb the two flights of stairs to Angela’s office to borrow hers. But either I could carry keys, etc., in one hand, and the broom in the other, or I could leave them in my bag and not lock my office door. I chose the latter. (When I stopped at the grocery store on my way home, I didn’t have that choice. But that’s another story.)

My advice? Wear something with pockets. I know I will tomorrow.
